Blessing Lambs
Sharing and Praying with Children

In Children’s Chapel, we take turns holding and hugging the Blessing Lamb during prayer time. The children learn that when they have the lamb it is their turn to tell of joys and blessings and give to God the things, which make them mad or sad or worried or scared. Each child gets a chance to talk or just hug the lamb when it is his or her turn.

The rest of the group learns too that their listening is a way to show caring for each other.

Adults working with children have found that the lamb becomes a special comfort for them. Therefore, lambs are now being given to children suffering grief or trauma or being hospitalized. Older siblings receive a lamb when a Baby Prayer Blanket and booklet is given to a family.

Leaders in other programs have begun to use a lamb during sharing and praying times too. Children of many ages, races and economic backgrounds seem to respond well to the lamb, especially when it is accompanied by the story of the Good Shepherd. (Jesus’ The Good Shepherd parable, according to Sofia Cavaletti, Italian Montessori teacher of religious education, is children’s very favorite.)
